Institute for Nanoscience Steering Committee and Co-Directors

The Steering Committee for the Joint Institute for Nanoscience consists of ten (10) members with the first-named undersigned signatories, or their designees, having the power to appoint on behalf of the University and Battelle, respectively, one-half of the membership. The term of office of a Steering Committee member shall be three (3) years and an appointing party may, at its sole discretion, remove or replace a member of the Steering Committee appointed by that party at any time or fill any vacancy in any position for which it has the right to make an appointment. Until otherwise changed by agreement of the parties, the parties shall each designate one person to serve as Co-Directors of the Joint Institute for Nanoscience. Both Co-Directors shall be members of the Steering Committee and alternate for terms of one (1) year in presiding over Steering Committee meetings. In the absence of the presiding officer, the other Co-Director shall preside over Steering Committee Meetings. The initial presiding officer shall be Battelle's appointee.

Steering Committee Responsibilities

The responsibilities of the Steering Committee of the Joint Institute for Nanoscience shall initially include the following, which may from time to time be modified by the Board:

develop and propose to the Board, as requested, strategic and operational plans for the Joint Institute for Nanoscience;

identify significant research areas and other programs in the field of Nanoscience offering significant potential;

oversee research conducted by the Joint Institute for Nanoscience;

prepare and submit, subject to the Board's approval, grant applications and other proposals to third parties for support of research in Nanoscience;

periodically report to the Board the plans, progress, and problems of the Joint Institute for Nanoscience;

develop, prepare and manage expenditure budgets as approved by the Board and parties hereto;

conduct a search and make recommendations to the Board and the parties a candidate for the position of executive director of the Joint Institute for Nanoscience;

make recommendations to the Board and the parties for appointments and reappointments on the Steering Committee;

coordinate and schedule use of University and PNNL facilities for research and other activities of the Joint Institute for Nanoscience; and

make recommendations to the Board and parties for participation by third parties in the activities of the Joint Institute for Nanoscience.
